Yellow Fever

Yellow fever is a serious infection spread by bites from infected mosquitoes.

Yellow fever is typically found in Africa, South America, Central America and the Caribbean. If you are travelling to one of these areas we recommend visiting our travel clinic to discuss the vaccine and for up to date advice on bite prevention.

Reduce your risk of yellow fever

To reduce your chances of catching yellow fever while travelling we recommend actively taking steps to prevent mosquito bites. Never assume that where you’re staying will be taking steps to keep mosquitoes at bay, always bring your own deterrents and follow this advice:

  • Wear loose long-sleeved clothing and long trousers where possible to reduce exposed skin.
  • Insect repellents should be used on exposed skin and thin clothing, always follow the manufacturers’ guidance.
  • Control the number of mosquitoes present by using repellents in areas you will regularly using.
  • Use a mosquito net impregnated with insect repellent while you sleep.

Vaccination against yellow fever

Vaccination against yellow fever is often recommended to prevent the disease from spreading amongst travellers. It’s also recommended if you are travelling to an area where yellow fever is found or the country you’re visiting requires you to have a certificate proving you have been vaccinated against yellow fever.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor straight away if you get symptoms of yellow fever while travelling in an area where the infection is found. Be sure to tell your GP that you think you have been bitten by a mosquito and accurately describe your symptoms.
