Hepatitis A

Hepatitis A is a liver infection that is caused by a virus that is spread in the poo of an infected person.

It’s uncommon in the UK, but there are times when there is increased risk. Travellers to parts of the world with poor levels of sanitation should be particularly aware of the risks and consider the vaccine before travelling to one of the following areas.

  • Sub-Saharan and northern Africa
  • The Indian subcontinent (particularly India, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Nepal)
  • Some parts of the Far East (excluding Japan)
  • The Middle East
  • South and Central America

Reduce your risk of Hepatitis A

The best way to reduce your risk of Hepatitis A is to be vaccinated against the condition. Book your appointment online with the team for advice on the Hepatitis A vaccine.

While travelling we recommend:

  • Practising good hygiene and keep your hands clean in areas with poor sanitation.
  • Paying attention to where your food and water is coming from and how it is prepared. If you suspect your food has been prepared with unclean water, do not eat it.

There is a vaccine for Hepatitis A

As the risk in the UK for Hepatitis A is so low, we are not routinely vaccinated against it. However, before travelling to an at-risk area we recommend talking to our team to determine if the vaccine is appropriate.

Ideally, your vaccinations for Hepatitis A would be started at least 2 or 3 weeks before you travel, although in some cases it can be given up to the day of your departure.

Seek medical advice in the following cases:

  • You have symptoms of hepatitis A – a blood test can usually confirm whether you have the infection.
  • You might have been exposed to the hepatitis A virus recently but you do not have any symptoms – treatment given early on may be able to stop the infection developing.

If you are unsure if you need the Hepatitis A vaccine, we recommend booking an appointment with our travel clinic. Our team will assess your risk based on where you plan on travelling and advise the best vaccination course.
