Meningococcal Disease

Meningococcal disease typically describes two major illnesses – meningitis and septicaemia (blood poisoning).

The risk to travellers is typically considered low unless you are travelling to an area that is currently experiencing an outbreak or you will be travelling ‘rough’, for example, backpacking and staying in hospitals. Also, travelling to locations with large crowds increases your risk of contracting meningococcal disease as it can travel and develop quite quickly.

Reduce your risk

As the disease is spread through the air it can be difficult to prevent. However, following basic personal hygiene etiquette when coughing and sneezing can help reduce your risk. While travelling always try to do the following:

  • Wash hands with soap and water or alcohol hand gel.
  • Avoid putting your hand in contact with your eyes, nose and mouth.
  • Maintain good personal hygiene and use disposable tissues when coughing or sneezing and dispose of them appropriately.

Vaccination

Vaccines to protect against multiple strains of meningococcal meningitis for travellers are available at MX Travel Clinic. If you are travelling to an at-risk country, particularly if your stay will be long, we strongly advise enquiring about the vaccine.
